Introduction

The renowned Calcutta Jain Temple, also recognized as the Parasnath Temple, preserves the enduring heritage of Jainism in Calcutta, showcasing distinctive artistic elements. Constructed in 1867 at the heart of North Calcutta, Maniktala, by Jain Rai Baddridas Bahdoor Mookim, it comprises four temples: Shitalanath, Parshvanath, Chandraprabhu, and Mahaprabhu. The primary shrine venerates the tenth Tirthankar, Shitalanatha.

Architecture

In terms of architecture, the temple exhibits exquisite designs within an impressive structure connected by three verandas, enhancing its allure. Mirror-inlaid pillars and windows adorned with beautiful paintings grace the walls. The marble images don gold necklaces, silver lotus pedestals, and prominent diamond-inlaid foreheads. The outer section is opulently adorned with ornate mosaic glasswork on the walls, while the ceiling and columns feature rich embellishments. A chandelier with over a hundred branches illuminates this section. The temple’s interiors are breathtaking, complemented by outdoor spaces surrounded by vibrant flower gardens and fountains. A small stream flows through, enhancing the scenic beauty, and a well-maintained reservoir adds to the overall charm. Colorful fishes gather at the water’s surface at the mere hint of food grains. Elaborate marble paving contributes to the solemnity and purity of the temple’s floor.

The temple showcases exceptional artistic inclinations evident in the overall decoration of both its interiors and exteriors. Additionally, it hosts paintings by the renowned artist Ganesh Muskare. Chandeliers, or Jhar Battis, further enhance the interior’s brilliance, adding an extra shimmer to the temple’s serene ambiance.
