The Shatrunjaya Jain Temples are a vast complex of Jain shrines situated on Shatrunjaya Hill near Palitana in Bhavnagar district, Gujarat. The hill is regarded as one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites in Jainism and is traditionally associated with Rishabhanatha, the first Tirthankara. Jain tradition holds that Rishabhanatha sanctified the hill, while his grandson Pundarika is associated with attaining liberation here. The site developed as a major centre of Jain pilgrimage over many centuries.
The temple-city contains approximately 863 marble temples, arranged in groups known as tun
ks, or enclosed temple precincts. Construction and reconstruction continued for nearly nine centuries, beginning in the medieval period and expanding substantially through the later centuries under the patronage of Jain merchants, rulers and religious communities. The Adinath Temple, dedicated to Rishabhanatha, is the principal shrine of the complex. Pilgrims reach the temple-city after climbing approximately 3,500–3,750 stone steps from the base of the hill.
