Overview

In the early 19th century, Murshidabad reached its zenith, marked by a flourishing environment for trade and banking that lured numerous Marwari Jains to establish roots there. The towns of Azimganj and Jiaganj emerged as pivotal centers for the Marwari Jain community. Over time, their prosperity surged, leading to the construction of several opulent mansions and Jain temples. One Among the notable families were the Dugars.

An essential stop on the customary Murshidabad tour is the Kathgola Palace and Garden, commissioned by Dhanpat Singh Dugar and Lakshmipat Singh Dugar in 1873. Collaborating with both French and Bengali architects, the Dugars transformed a segment of their palace into an exquisite fusion of art and architecture. The palace showcases a harmonious blend of Victorian lion motifs and Michael Angelo statues that have dramatically altered the ambiance of the place.

Of considerable fame is the Adinath Temple, surrounded by a collection of Jain and Hindu temples. Within its premises, 17 intricate images of Jain Tirthankara’s stand as a testament to the spiritual heritage and reverence of the region.

The Adinath Temple, also recognized as the Paresh Nath Temple or Kathgola Temple, stands within the Kathgola Gardens. This revered temple is a homage to Bhagawan Adishvar. The deity’s idol, believed to be approximately 900 years old, graces the temple with its ancient presence. The temple boasts splendid architecture and intricate sculptures that reflect its rich historical significance

The Architectural Significance

Within the Kathgola Gardens stands the Kathgola Palace, an opulent four-story edifice. Adorned with an intricately embellished façade, the palace boasts a lavish interior adorned with paintings, mirrors, and exquisite furniture. Adjacent to the palace, a quaint pond and a traditional stepwell, known as a baoli, add to the picturesque charm of the surroundings.

The architectural style of Kathgola Palace reflects a blend of Indo-European and Greco-Roman influences. The palace complex is spread over a vast area and comprises several buildings, including a grand mansion, gardens, courtyards, and temples. The intricate carvings, ornate columns, and exquisite artwork within the palace exemplify the craftsmanship of that time.

Kathgola Palace also housed an extensive collection of artifacts, including rare manuscripts, sculptures, paintings, and antique furniture. The palace served as a center for intellectual and cultural activities, attracting scholars, artists, and poets from all over the country.

Legend has it that the cultivation of black roses once thrived in this very place. However, today, the landscape is adorned predominantly with mango trees. Encompassing a vast expanse of 30 acres, these gardens create a captivating environment.
