The temple, a remarkable testament to the architectural and religious heritage of the Nattukottai Nagarathar community, was meticulously constructed by the devout Vaishnavite, Sevugan Chetty. Mr. Chetty’s unwavering devotion to Lord Vishnu and his regular pilgrimages to Tirupathi, which were funded through contributions from his fellow townspeople, were well-known throughout the region. Even as he advanced in age, Mr. Chetty persisted in his sacred journeys.
One fateful day, during the commencement of yet another pilgrimage, Sevugan Chetty fell unconscious. In that transcendent moment, the Lord Himself manifested before him, advising him to cease his arduous travels to Tirupathi. Instead, the Lord graciously promised to come to the very place of his devotee. Following this divine revelation, Sevugan Chetty was instructed to move west from his current location, where he discovered a coconut shell and a sacred thulasi plant. This providential encounter marked the inception of the temple.
This revered temple occupies a pivotal role in the Vaishnavite tradition of the southern region and is considered equivalent in sanctity to the renowned Tirupathi shrine.
