Amaralingeswara Temple, located on the banks of the Krishna River at Amaravati in Andhra Pradesh, is one of the most revered Shaivite temples of South India and one of the Pancharama Kshetras, the five sacred temples associated with Lord Shiva. Dedicated to Lord Amareswara, or Amaralingeswara, the temple occupies a site of considerable historical and religious importance. Although its origins are ancient, the present complex represents centuries of construction, renovation and artistic patronage, with inscriptions providing evidence of its medieval history.
The temple is particularly renowned for its imposing white Shiva Lingam, traditionally regarded as one of the most distinctive sacred images among the Pancharama temples. Its religious importance is further enhanced by its association with the sacred landscape of Amaravati, an area that has been an important centre of Hindu and Buddhist culture for centuries. Inscriptions in Telugu and Sanskrit preserved within the temple complex further contribute to its historical significance.
