Bhairudan Kothari Haveli, Bikaner

Tangible

Introduction

An exotic splendor in Bikaner Bhairudan Kothari Haveli, situated in the Oswal Kothari Mohalla in Bikaner. An extraordinary house with a lavish intricacy like a palace remembered from a dream. An extravagant residence with an eccentric design, built by a 19th century merchant Prince Bikaner. One of the Rajput states of India is an ancient fortified city set in a barren and a dusty desert. The prosperity and stability of Bikaner were due chiefly to its enlightened Maharaja Sir Ganga Singh. A large number of Marwaris, the Lombards of India, therefore migrated to Bikaner. These Marwari merchants, who originally came from Marwar and Jodhpur, made their fortunes elsewhere, like Bombay and Calcutta. These people were Jains who preached Jainism, whose adherents are conspicuous for their charity and for their high respect for all living things.

Architecture

The builder of this exotic splendor, Bhairudan Kothari Haveli was such a merchant Prince who had his business in Calcutta. Work began on this haveli in early 20th century and was still incomplete till his death in 1948 because changes were made time and again to achieve perfection. The haveli is built on a cramped urban site, small and intricate. The carved stone facade, with its projecting Oriels and asymmetry, is typical of the city. Inside the haveli are a series of rooms, lavishly furnished with colored decoration, plaster work, carving, marble work. Colored tiles imported from England give an impression of exotic coolness in the heat, suggesting the cosmopolitan glamour of Florence in Venice. The marble came from Italy, but all the intricate and excellent detailing was carved by local Craftsman. Room after room is elaborately decorated walls, floors and ceilings in a varied style which is an indescribable mixture of European baroque and rococo. Distorting mirror frames emphasize the fantastic character of the interior. A touch of Birmingham is also found. The most remarkable melange is the upper part of the house. The arrangement of the space is cleverly done with an arcade courtyard open to the sky above, with a whole series of flat roofs on different levels. Each of these levels has a marble floor, interconnected by a network of marble staircases that create an enchanting secret world and extravaganza. A dream architecture high above the narrow streets of the Old city. Exquisitely composed, ancient, subtle tone patterns in the marble. Bold checks provide a foil for the floral motifs enliven a medley of staircase tile designs. Elaborately carved wood wooden doors of varied sizes, optically vibrant geometrical marble floor work are seen in the rooms paintings. Stained glass windows enhance the beauty of several rooms in the haveli. Delicate floral designs ornament the walls of a room at the first floor room with mirrored mosaic ceiling adorning a chandelier of pendant crystal flowers. A villa of unimaginable craftsmanship and art.
