Bhanwar Niwas, Bikaner

Tangible

Introduction

Bhanwar Niwas, located in the fortified city of Bikaner, is situated within one of the Rajput states in Rajasthan. Rajasthan holds a profound historical narrative of conflicts and battles against the Delhi Sultanate and the Great Mughals, all in a bid to uphold the glory of the Rajputs. The state radiates a splendor deeply rooted in predominantly Hindu and Rajputana art and architecture. Amidst this grandeur, Bhanwar Niwas, also recognized as Rampuria Haveli, stands out for its exceptional architectural fusion, seamlessly blending Rajputana and European styles in Bikaner. Established in 1927 by the textile and real estate merchant Bhanwarlal Rampuria, it earned the accreditation of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) as a heritage building.

Architecture

Constructed with rose-colored Dulmera sandstone and white marble adorned with intricate carvings, the grand staircase elevates its architectural excellence. The Italian marble used for the staircase and balcony enhances its perfection. Local craftsmen, including carpenters, contributed to the art and interior designs, creating furniture based on the designs of Lazarus and Co. from Calcutta. In terms of architectural styles and specifications, the haveli incorporates elements typical of Rajasthani architecture, such as ornate jharokhas (balconies), chhatris (pavilions), and intricately carved facades. These elaborate jharokhas and chhatris not only serve decorative purposes but also functional ones, contributing to the distinctive appearance of the building. The facades of Bhanwar Niwas likely feature intricate carvings, including floral motifs, geometric patterns, and depictions of mythological or historical scenes.

The European architectural influences found on some havelis including the Bhanwar Niwas reflects on the evolving tastes and preferences of early 20th century. This could manifest in elements such as arched doorways and windows, inspired by European styles. Typically all the havelis adopt a courtyard – centric layout, where the rooms and living spaces are arranged around the central open area. This design facilitates natural light and ventilation and also enhances the overall aesthetic appeal.
