ARCHITECTURE
Lamayuru Monastery is strategically located on a steep mountain ridge, providing panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and mountains. The complex is organized in a tiered manner, with various structures built at different levels on the hillside. The monastery is designed to blend harmoniously with the natural landscape. The main assembly hall of Lamayuru is a central structure within the complex. This hall serves as a place for religious ceremonies, rituals, and gatherings. The architecture of the assembly hall typically follows the Tibetan Buddhist style, with a distinctive façade, prayer wheels, and colorful murals depicting Buddhist themes. Surrounding the main assembly hall, there are meditation chambers and living quarters for the monks. These structures are often made of mud bricks and feature small windows, providing a simple yet functional living space for the resident monks. Lamayuru Monastery has various stupas and chortens within its premises. These structures serve as religious monuments and often house sacred relics. The stupas are characterized by their dome-shaped tops, and the chortens may be adorned with prayer flags. Similar to Alchi Monastery, Lamayuru is known for its ancient frescoes and murals. The interior walls of the main assembly hall are decorated with intricate paintings depicting Buddhist deities, scenes from the life of Buddha, and various religious motifs. These artworks contribute to the spiritual and aesthetic ambiance of the monastery. The entrance to Lamayuru Monastery is marked by a gate, often adorned with colorful prayer flags. The gate may also feature traditional Tibetan motifs and carvings. Pilgrims and visitors pass through this entrance to access the main courtyard and assembly hall.
