The Taranga Jain Temple, situated on the Taranga Hills in Mehsana district, Gujarat, is one of the finest surviving Jain monuments of the medieval period. The principal temple was built in the 12th century and is traditionally associated with Kumarapala, the Solanki ruler and an important patron of Jainism. The hill has a much older religious history, with archaeological evidence of Buddhist activity dating to the 4th–5th centuries.
The principal shrine is dedicated to Ajitnath, the second Jain Tirthankara, whose approximately five-meter-high image occupies the sanctum. The Svetambara complex comprises 14 temples, accompanied by five Digambara shrines, making Taranga an important center of Jain pilgrimage.
