The Old Stock Exchange Building at Manek Chowk, Ahmedabad, is an important heritage landmark associated with the city’s commercial and industrial history. The Ahmedabad Stock Exchange was established in 1894, emerging alongside the rapid growth of Ahmedabad’s textile industry and becoming one of India’s earliest stock exchanges. The present heritage building was erected in 1919, facing Mahurat Pol, one of the oldest residential clusters of the walled city. The exchange continued to function here until its relocation in the 1990s.
The building occupies a historically significant setting, surrounded by major landmarks including Jama Masjid, Badshah no Hajiro and Rani no Hajiro. Its location at the heart of Manek Chowk reflects Ahmedabad’s long-standing role as a centre of trade, finance and urban commerce. The building once accommodated the bustling activities of brokers and traders, with large halls designed to accommodate substantial gatherings before the transition to electronic trading.
